Matthias Krenn, PhD.
Dr. Matthias Krenn has been an Affiliate Research Scientist at the Paralysis Center at Massachusetts General Hospital since 2021.
His research focuses on human neurorehabilitation after spinal cord injury, with particular emphasis on restoring motor function to improve mobility and quality of life. He holds a primary appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC).Dr. Krenn combines biomedical engineering with clinical neuroscience to study how noninvasive electrical stimulation can change the activity of spinal networks below the injury. His work bridges foundational science and clinical care, advancing spinal neuromodulation and shaping new therapies for neurorehabilitation.Dr. Krenn earned his doctorate in Biomedical Engineering from the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, in 2015, with a dissertation on neuromuscular electrical stimulation as a countermeasure to age-related sarcopenia. He joined UMMC in 2017 to pursue human neuroscience research, where close collaboration with clinicians and patients connects his scientific expertise to real-world neurorehabilitation challenges.
