The Paralysis Center Process

Our process involves a comprehensive evaluation utilizing the best in imaging and diagnostic testing along with evaluation by multiple experts. We bring together a multi-disciplinary paralysis team under one roof. Using the expertise of specialists in the fields of neurology, neurophysiology , physical medicine and rehabilitation, physical and occupational therapy, orthotics, orthopedics, and plastic surgery – we provide patients the most comprehensive treatment plan for the best possible outcome.

Initial Consult

When you book a consult at the Paralysis Center, here’s what you can expect:

1. Your initial consult will be with Dr. Justin Brown or one of the other Harvard paralysis specialists. During this consult we will review your history, any imaging and external EMG tests you may have, and perform a physical examination. We will then determine what interventions might be considered and what additional testing may be required to determine your candidacy for those interventions. You will likely undergo a new EMG study at that visit with one of our neurologists and other studies may be ordered.

2. You will then return to see Dr. Brown who will review all testing results and determine: a) whether we should proceed with an intervention; or b) whether there is evidence that you are recovering and simply need a comprehensive rehabilitation plan to direct that recovery.

3. You will then meet with one of the Paralysis Center therapists who, after receiving that plan from Dr. Brown, will perform functional testing, take photos and videos, and develop a pre-operative therapy plan if you are interested in surgery or a rehabilitation and strengthening plan if it looks like you will go on to recovery. Sometimes splints are made or braces are fitted to help with this process.

4. If you require surgery and that surgery involves a team, Dr. Brown’s office will then schedule a combined clinic with Dr. Brown and another member of the Paralysis Center surgical team

5. After surgery you will then meet with the therapist once again to help you graduate from any brace that was required and to develop a rehabilitation program in order to get the most out of your reconstructive surgery.

6. After you have made your initial recovery, follow up visits are every 3 months for about 2 years or until you have made a full recovery. Occasionally there are procedures to be done later on to optimize the function recovered. We will stick with you until we have met your goals and achieved the best function we can.
